So, we were chatting about marketing and newsletters and omnichannel blah blah blah, and he said this (not word for word but close)…

I want people to feel like they used to back in the day when you walked in the door of a store and heard the bell ring and smelled that familiar smell. It felt like you were connected to something or someone.

His words took me back to when I was 6 and 7 years old and my dad would let me go to the convenience store that was next to his jewelry store in Penn Mart Shopping Center. I still remember how it was laid out. Snacks in the front, drinks in the back and a deli counter that made sandwiches to order and every person there knew my name. They knew I shouldn’t be buying candy (I’ve been a type 1 diabetic since I was 4 years old) but would never charge me for a mini peppermint patty or a tiny tootsie roll if it happened to land on the counter at check out.

It’s those experiences and feelings that stick with you.

How do we create that now? We can’t make our emails smell like the corner store from our childhood and the bell sound of our computers isn’t anything like the one that dangles on the door hinge and notifies everyone of your arrival.

My only answer is that we have to be real. We need to share why we do what we do. The real feelings that go along with building something that we truly love. You can do that in so many ways, video, email, direct mail, event marketing. But no matter how you decide to market to your audience, make sure you show up as yourself. It’s the one guaranteed thing that will set you apart from your competition.

If you are ready to feel all the feels but now sure how to get started and where to keep all of your ideas, here is a content scheduler that might help.
